Feel Safe & Confident With TELUS LivingWell Companion

Amanda Bowen

TELUS LivingWell Companion is a veteran in the medical alert system industry with thoroughly proven reliability and results. Regardless, it remains accessible even to those on a fixed income owing to its attractive price point, favourable terms and total cost of ownership.

TELUS is a longstanding provider of medical tech solutions and has been trusted by over 12 million Canadians. The company offers Canadian seniors access to 24/7 support, ensuring you get help whenever you need it.

With TELUS, you’ll get a quality medical alert system that performs as advertised. TELUS LivingWell Companion offers responsive, personalized care options that provide seniors the freedom to live independently. Just like any other alert system, however, it does have its advantages and areas of strength, so this article will consider its features and costs. It will also provide answers to some of the systems’s most frequently asked questions.

Key Features

The LivingWell Companion comes in three versions: LivingWell Companion™ Home (Basic), LivingWell Companion™ Home (Fall Detection), and LivingWell Companion™ On The Go (GPS). Also, you can get the device on Apple Watch with TELUS Health Companion™.

All versions of LivingWell Companion offer basic 24/7 medical alert services to thousands of Canadians, allowing them to live independently without worrying themselves or their loved ones.

When an alert is received, TELUS LivingWell Companion’s trained operators will immediately contact the customer through the pendant using the two-way voice speaker to confirm an emergency. If the customer can’t be reached or an emergency is confirmed, the trained operator first contacts up to three family and/or friends. If family or friends are unavailable or if the situation warrants, a trained operator will then contact emergency services.

The LivingWell Companion™ Home is ideal for retirees and individuals who spend a lot of time at home. The Fall Detection version is a little more sophisticated and senses a severe fall. When a loved one falls, the device alerts the response centre automatically Since the device may not detect all falls, in the case of a fall, the user is encouraged to press the button if at all possible, instead of waiting for the call.

LivingWell Companion™ On The Go (GPS) best suits individuals who perform many outdoor activities. This device is fitted with a GPS tracker and instantly pinpoints the user’s location when they are in trouble and need to be found as soon as possible. If your loved one finds themselves in an unfamiliar place and presses the emergency button, their device will transmit their coordinates, and you can rest assured that help is on the way.

The LivingWell Companion™ On The Go (GPS) is also portable, and may be worn as a pendant around the neck. It is water-resistant, which means that you don’t have to worry about wearing it in the shower or if it gets rained on.

Home Base Station

The included home base station features a large help button and communicates wirelessly with your wearable device.

Two-Colour Signal Indicator

By being able to easily see an indication of whether you have a signal, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that your help button is fully operational.

Built-In Battery

The built-in battery requires a daily charge—and the pendant will display a flashing red light when the battery needs to be changed so that you won’t have to worry about being unprotected.

Automatic Fall Detection

Available as an optional feature, the fall detection technology includes a built-in sensor which uses certain motion parameters in order to help detect whether there has been a fall. As a result, if a fall is detected, you will still be able to initiate a two-way voice call to determine if medical assistance is necessary. Since the device uses motion parameters, it may not detect all falls. As such, in case of a fall, the user should not wait for the call and is encouraged to always press the button, if possible.

Water Resistance

One of the most practical features is that TELUS medical alert wearable devices are highly water-resistant, which means that if your device gets wet, you will still be able to enjoy its benefits.

What We Liked

The best part about having a Livingwell Companion device is the instant connection with a medical response agent whenever there is a medical emergency. The two-way communication capability allows its user to request the right kind of help so that the emergency response agent arrives prepared. Your listed family or friends receive a call from a trained operator when the alert is received, and they can respond first in case they are around.

There are many other things to like about the TELUS LivingWell Companion ecosystem.

  • The design of the wearable devices is particularly nice. Some medical alert devices are bulky and cumbersome, but the TELUS pendants are sleek, light, and stylish.
  • The devices feature built-in GPS, which means that you can be located quickly in the event of an emergency, even if you can’t call for help from a cell phone or landline.
  • The system is reliable, and the battery is built in.
  • The price is really good for the service you get.
  • The optional wristband is functional and attractive.
  • The home base station is easy to use.

What We Disliked

The system isn’t perfect, though—no system is, after all—and there are a few small downsides to consider before signing up for the service

  • You will need to pay more for devices with fall detection features.
  • The industrial design of the home base station may not suit everyone’s tastes.
  • The wrist strap is only available for the Home (basic) pendant.
  • You need to install the system by yourself or with telephone support.

Cost

The TELUS LivingWell Companion devices come at relatively pocket-friendly prices compared with similar offerings in the market. We like it because it offers among the lowest monthly prices on a 1-year term and life-time ownership costs of comparable personal emergency response services in Canada.

As of this writing, the following pricing options are available:

  • Home  $30/month on a 1-year term. Save $180 compared to non-term price.
  • Home with Fall Detection $40/month on a 1-year term. Save $180 compared to non-term price.
  • Go $50/month on a 1-year term. Save $180 compared to non-term price.

All work great and offer good value when you consider how much they extend the function of the equipment. The system also features a GPS-enabled model, so that your emergency button will work even when you are on the go.

There is also an Apple Watch version for $54 per month, which includes the cost of financing the Apple Watch on a two-year term.

All the available models feature the same core functions, such as an emergency button and rapid response, so it’s really just a matter of determining whether you need fall detection or GPS.

Reputation

TELUS is one of Canada’s premier telecommunications companies and has been around since 1990. In other words, you are in good hands with TELUS.

Our Final Take

Offered by a reputable provider, TELUS LivingWell Companion provides a system that will help you or your loved ones feel safe regardless of where they reside in Canada. Their subscriptions are fairly priced and you’re guaranteed value for your money.

All things considered, the TELUS LivingWell medical alert system is a great choice. The pros greatly outweigh the cons, and the price is good, too, with plans starting at less than $1 a day.

If you are looking for a reliable emergency alert system in Canada, then we highly recommend TELUS Livingwell Companion, as it is one of the very best options on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a contract or any hidden fees?

LivingWell Companion is offered with both one-year term and no-term contracts. TELUS Health Companion on Apple Watch requires a two-year term for the financing of the watch itself. The plans have no hidden fees.

Do I need a phone line to use the system?

No, there is no landline required to use the service. LivingWell works on the TELUS network even if you have no phone or are otherwise away from home and using the GPS device. iPhone and AppleWatch are required for TELUS Health Companion.

Who installs the system?

Unfortunately, you need to install the system yourself. The good news is that it’s incredibly easy to set up. A TELUS agent will walk you through the process step-by-step over the telephone. The entire set-up process can be completed in only a few minutes, and, once installed, the system won’t need to be updated or reconfigured again. Once the home base is installed, you can test your emergency button to make sure that everything is working properly, and then that’s it: you’re good to go!
